Snødronningen – Grand Kyiv Ballet

Welcome to classical ballet for young and old as Grand Kyiv Ballet presents The Snow Queen.

This performance is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale of the same title, a story of eternal love and friendship that overcomes even the greatest obstacles.

In this magical tale, a boy named Kai and a girl named Gerda live side by side as inseparable friends.

Kai’s grandmother tells them about the Snow Queen, the powerful ruler of ice and snow. She also tells them about an evil troll who created a cursed mirror—a mirror that distorts everything it reflects. The good and beautiful become ugly and cold, while the wicked are magnified.

One day, the mirror shatters into a thousand pieces, and tiny shards are carried away by the wind. One of them finds its way into Kai’s eye, another into his heart. Suddenly, he sees the world through a cold and distorted lens—everything that was once beautiful now appears ugly. His heart, once filled with warmth and joy, turns to ice. He becomes distant and unfeeling until he is eventually lured away by the Snow Queen, who takes him to her icy palace.

Gerda, heartbroken over losing her best friend, embarks on a long and dangerous journey to find Kai and bring him home. Along the way, she faces many challenges—trolls, robbers, snowflakes, mysterious creatures, and royalty—but nothing stops her.

At last, she finds Kai in the Snow Queen’s palace, where the cold has made him numb. But Gerda never gives up. Her love and warm tears melt the ice in his heart, breaking the curse.

The Snow Queen is a grand and beautiful ballet that takes the audience on a magical journey through icy landscapes and enchanting worlds. The performance is suitable for all ages.

Grand Kyiv Ballet, also known as Kyiv Grand Ballet, is an independent touring ballet company from Kyiv. Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, they are temporarily operating from the International Ballet Academy in Bellevue, Washington, USA.
