Kings is a sequel or a mirror of the production Queens. This time with male dancers. Once again, age and aging, and the well-experienced professional dancer, are placed under scrutiny. Both Queens and Kings are a “resistance movement,” an insistence that the seasoned dancer possesses experience-based expertise worth preserving.

In a time where parts of the cycle are being eliminated, a boundary is reached—a certain age where one is pushed aside. The personal aspect of this is suddenly being relegated to a secondary status. According to author Margareth Gulette, “the narrow focus on illness” is an overwhelming reduction of the aging person. It is as if human events could occur without a feeling subject.

“The problem with being seduced by the surface is that we are torn away from the contexts that make life meaningful,” writes art critic Kjetil Roed in his book Art and Death – A User Manual. Art can be a powerful weapon against the oppression brought about by aging and death stereotypes. In what he describes as art’s alternatives, the artist can reveal their vulnerability, thereby allowing others to reveal theirs. He also writes about what he calls the invisibility of what we do not want to see and challenges us around the concept of “beauty,” as something we have the opportunity to turn around and make accessible behind the surface.

Kings highlights the experiences found in the professional dancer’s body. How does the aging dancer move, and what experiences are inherent in that?
